Core Nutrition Philosophy
Nutrients are compounds in the food we eat that provide the foundation for health. Our bodies’ daily needs generally include essential and non-essential nutrients, protein, carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals, all of which play different roles. If that sounds complex, consider that a well-balanced diet filled with a variety of fruits and vegetables typically delivers everything your body needs. However, if eating this healthy every day is more of an ideal goal rather than reality for you, our commitment is to help support the nutrient gaps you may be experiencing.
Nutrients: core to who we are
Your body doesn’t make essential nutrients but it needs them to function properly – they work together to perform hundreds of key roles that are necessary for healthy bodily function and growth. You must get them from food or supplements. Your body does make sufficient nonessential nutrients but you also can get them from food. Sometimes, nonessential nutrients become conditionally essential due to certain life circumstances, like during pregnancy or lactation.
Macronutrients: “building blocks” and energy
Your body also gets the macronutrients it needs from food. Protein – often called “the building blocks of the body” – is the main component of muscles, bones, organs, skin and nails. Protein needs can vary based on age, gender, weight, activity level and overall health goals. Carbohydrates, made up of sugar, fiber and starch, provide energy and support digestion. And fat is a key component in cellular structure. While you need only a moderate amount of “healthy” fat, it is important for brain health, storing energy, protecting vital organs, absorbing nutrients, producing hormones, and supporting satiety.
Micronutrients: sustaining life
Vitamins are organic substances that work with macronutrients to perform hundreds of roles that sustain life. Your body cannot produce many of the vitamins you need, so you must get them from food or supplements, making them essential nutrients. While some vitamins are stored in the body, others must be consumed daily. Minerals are inorganic substances that are found in rocks, soil and water. They are taken up by plants or consumed by animals, and we get them through eating those plants or animals. Minerals are important to bone and tooth health and help turn food into energy.
Plant nutrients: powerful support
Plants provide valuable nutrients with benefits beyond those of vitamins and minerals. We call these phytonutrients, and our philosophy about their power dates back to 1915. That’s when, while living and working in China, Nutrilite™ brand founder Carl Rehnborg made his first correlation between the foods people ate and their overall health. That history inspires the work we do today and the belief we have in the power of phytonutrients.
“Supplementation should be tailored to an individual’s nutritional needs while considering their overall dietary intake, health and physical activity. Dietary supplements can also be recommended for targeted benefits to specific bodily structures or functions, like bones or the immune system.”
